About Trek to Rara Lake

Adventure Hub Nepal will start to offer a ‘wild west trek’ from 2017 which is to the Rara Lake trek and it lies in the remote far northwest of Nepal. The lake is beautiful and tranquil. The region around Jumla and Rara Lake is still relatively unexplored. Our trek starts from Jumla, the largest upland hill town in western Nepal. Rara is Nepal’s largest lake and lies at an altitude of 2980m. An outstanding snow capped panorama of Dolpo and Tibetan mountains overshadows the scene across the deep clear waters of the lake. The National park consists of Himalayan black bear, leopard, black panther, musk deer, red panda, wild boar, Rhesus and languor monkeys and numerous species of birds. The final four days of the trek offer superb views over Mugu, the southern mountains of Humla and the border ranges of Tibet.

The trail takes us through grassy alpine pastures and remote villages, before descending steeply off the second pass to Jumla. From here, we fly back to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj. Highlights of the trek are; unsurpassed views of Rara Lake and mountain scenery, chance of spotting wildlife such as musk deer and black bear, ruins of the Malla dynasty’s old palace. ***Detailed itinerary itinerary can be customized according to your needs and length of stay***

Early morning breakfast and drive to the Kathmandu airport and then fly to Nepalgunj. Upon arrival in Nepalgunj, it is a short drive to the hotel and spend the night there.

This where all excitement starts because you will be flying to Jumla where you start your trek. Meet your porters after you get to Jumla airport. From here we will trek to Charya Chaur. Altitude is around 3000 meters today and the walk will be around 2 or 3 hours to get to our campsite where we will be staying. We will have the pleasure of a lovely view amongst a beautiful pine forest and south across the stunning TilaKhola (river).

From today we are on our own with our lovely crew who will be supporting us rest the of the trek for the next two and half weeks. Have breakfast and the crew will pack all the camping equipment and after that, we start our day walk across the Danphya Lagna Pass (3,600 meters ). We then slowly descend down to Lah Gad where we will set up our camp for the night, today’s walking is around 5 to 6 hours and we also have to ascend a steep trail and cross over the Danphya Lagna.  It is a 2-hour continual climb from camp before we descend off the pass to our campsite called Lah Gad below the village called Bumri. This where we camp for the night (2450 meters).

Trek from Lah Gad to Chautha which around 5 to 5 and half hours walking up to altitudes of 3100 meters, weaving our way on faint trails through the wilderness of the dense forest. Experience idyllic meadows and hanging valleys, we will be happy not to be in any rush. This isolated region of North-western Nepal is simply magical. We now head almost due north into the Chautha Valley and find another wonderful campsite surrounded by shady pines where we set up camp and settle in for the night. Enjoy a nice warm cup a tea, put your feet up and appreciate the view.

Trek from Chautha to Dhotu or JhariKhola Altitudes (2570 meters). Today trekking will be around 5 and a half hours. Have a yummy breakfast prepared by our team and start our day at Chautha where we continue north passing through the village of Bulbhule. The main trail descends north to Pina Village and the Mugu Karnali River. We now turn west (follow the wooden sign pointing out the ‘Way to Rara’) and walk through a true wonderland of pristine forested hillside to the cluster of flat-roofed dwellings that is Jhari Village. It is now time to set up our camp again in Dhotu or Jhari.

Today we trek to the shores of Rara Lake altitude is (3100 meters) it will be around 5 hours walking. This morning we ascend to a delightful open ridge that eventually drops us onto the southern shore of the jewel-like Rara Lake. It will take about 2 hours to walk around to the Park Headquarters and campsite on the lake’s northern side.  As always, our lovely crew will prepare nice warm drinks and have food waiting for us. Camp.

Today is set aside as an exploration day for Rara Lake. You can call it a rest day or whichever suits you.  Stay another night at Rara Lake.

Once at Rara we will be reluctant to leave. This place has a rare peace and tranquillity and captivating beauty. Today is free for you to wander and explore the magnificent lake area. You may want to walk around the lake on a path built in 1964. If you’re not too tired from your walking for the past few days you can always have a rest but keep an eye out for the ancient temples and Chapra villages found on the north side of the lake.

After a day’s rest or exploration we start our trek to Luma Village altitude is (2120 m), walking today is around 5 to 6 hours to our campsite.

Being properly acclimatized from our hike to Rara Lake, we are now ready to continue the trails north to Humla. Leaving Rara eastwards from the northern shore, the trail soon begins to climb a broad ridge before dropping into the valley of the Mugu Karnali. Get to our camp set up for the night and enjoy the view while our crew prepares the evening meal for us.

Today we trek to Changkheli, walking time today is around 5 to 6 hours to our campsite Changkhell high ridge. We begin a gradual ascent to the base of the Changkheli, a high ridge that leads into the main Humla Karnali Valley.  We will do a short climb tomorrow morning and this will provide us with an amazing sunrise over the magnificent snowy peaks of the Saipal Himal.

Trek from Changkhell across to the Chankel La Pass altitude is (3645 meters) and trek to Rimi Village altitude is (2550 Meters). Today is probably the longest walk we do which is around 6 to 7 hours to our campsite.

Our trail emerges from dense conifer and rhododendron forest on the south side of the ridge to high alpine meadow. It’s as if the landscape has been instantly transformed. The skyline is now dominated by the bulky Saipal Himal in Humla and Gurla Mandata across the border in Tibet. Beneath these seldom seen peaks lies Humla, a land of endless blue ridges, turquoise lakes, rivers snaking through deep valleys and vividly golden fields. We descend into the Humla Karnali Valle and then get to our campsite in the Chhetri village of Rimi for the night.

Trek from Chhetri village to Melcham altitude is (2300 meters) walking hours today is 5 to 6 hours to our campsite.

The isolated settlements in this valley are primitive, poor and life for its inhabitants has changed little over the centuries. In the fields, women sing heartily as they go about their laborious work and the men spin wool and tend to the livestock. All homes in this area are built from enormous timbers and cling to impossibly steep hillsides. From Rimi Village, it takes four days to reach Simikot. The distances traveled are short but don’t be deceived… we will be crossing precipitous valleys on rollercoaster trails. The scenery is truly spectacular as you walk.

These two days we will be doing 5 to 6 hours of walking and most of it will be downhill walking to the Pomkha 14 campsite.

5 to 6 hours of downhill walking to the Hatte 15 campsite (1900 m.)

From Ghatte to Simikot trekking is 4 to 5. We are so accustomed to the walking that we should be perfect walkers by now and the altitude is (2950 meters).  We will set up our campsite just above the Humla Karnali River.

By the time we climb up to Simikot, the altitude is (3000 meters). Enjoy a well-earned rest day in this picturesque place. The Humla will have worked its magic on you, and you will feel amazing!

Experience a wonderful rest day after that many days trekking around Western Nepal of up to 5 to 6 hours per day rest and relax in Simikot.

Have a quick breakfast early morning and load all our gear on the plane to fly to Nepalgunj and then fly back to Kathmandu from Nepalgunj in same day,  Flight time approximately 45 minutes each flight after well needed rest we will drop you off at your hotel and you can have lovely hot shower and we will meet for our dinner.
